Controlled Substance

In the United States, the Controlled Substances Act classifies drugs into five schedules based on medical utility and abuse potential. Most classical psychedelics are Schedule I (highest restriction, defined as having no accepted medical use and high abuse potential). This classification is increasingly challenged by clinical research demonstrating therapeutic potential, particularly for psilocybin and MDMA. Legal status varies significantly by country and jurisdiction, with some places moving toward decriminalization or regulated therapeutic access.
