    MAO Inhibitor

    Also known as: MAOI, monoamine oxidase inhibitor

    A substance that blocks the enzyme monoamine oxidase, which normally breaks down neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine.

    In psychedelic contexts, MAOIs are essential to ayahuasca: the Banisteriopsis caapi vine contains them, making orally inactive DMT bioavailable by preventing its breakdown in the gut. MAOIs also appear in pharmaceutical antidepressants. They carry significant drug interaction risks, particularly with serotonergic substances, tyramine-rich foods, and many common medications. Understanding MAOI interactions is critical for harm reduction.
