Not All Psychedelics Are Alike
The word "psychedelic" covers a remarkably diverse family of substances. Psilocybin mushrooms, LSD, DMT, mescaline, MDMA, ketamine, and ibogaine differ in their chemistry, receptor targets, duration of action, subjective character, and cultural histories. Grouping them under a single label can obscure important differences that matter for safety, intention, and experience. Understanding these distinctions is part of developing genuine psychedelic literacy.
Key Dimensions of Comparison
Duration is one of the most practical differences: a DMT experience may last 15 to 30 minutes, while an LSD journey can extend 8 to 12 hours, and an ibogaine experience may span 24 hours or more. Intensity and character also vary, from the often gentle, nature-connected quality of psilocybin to the more analytical or electric feel some people describe with LSD, to the rapid, immersive visions of smoked DMT. Pharmacologically, classic psychedelics (psilocybin, LSD, DMT, mescaline) work primarily through serotonin 2A receptors, while MDMA acts on serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine transporters, and ketamine targets NMDA glutamate receptors.
Choosing Based on Intention
Different substances may serve different purposes. Someone seeking gentle introspection might gravitate toward psilocybin, while someone working through trauma in a clinical context might benefit from MDMA's capacity to reduce fear and increase trust. Cultural and traditional contexts also offer guidance: ayahuasca carries centuries of ceremonial wisdom from Amazonian traditions, while ketamine's medical familiarity makes it accessible through legal clinical channels. There is no "best" psychedelic, only better and worse fits for a given person, intention, and circumstance.
