Flow States
The relationship between psychedelic experiences and flow states - what they share, how they differ, and why some people find their capacity for deep absorption improves after experiences.
Flow states are periods of deep, effortless engagement in which a person is so absorbed in an activity that time seems to pass differently and self-conscious monitoring of performance recedes. The psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, who studied and named this phenomenon, identified several characteristic features: challenge matched to skill level, clear goals and immediate feedback, a sense of personal control, and the dissolution of self-consciousness. Athletes, musicians, programmers, writers, and surgeons have all described these states in terms that show remarkable consistency across domains.
The relationship between flow states and psychedelic experiences is complex and somewhat paradoxical. Some qualities overlap: reduced self-monitoring, heightened absorption, a different relationship to time, and what Csikszentmihalyi called a sense of activity becoming its own reward. But the conditions that typically produce flow - familiar, practised activity at a level that stretches but does not overwhelm skill - are quite different from the conditions of a psychedelic experience. Flow tends to require a stable sense of self; psychedelics tend to destabilize it.
Where the relationship becomes clearer is in the aftermath of psychedelic experiences. Some people report that significant experiences shift their capacity for flow - that a loosened relationship to self-consciousness, a reduced tendency toward performance anxiety, and an expanded sense of what is possible in creative or physical practice persist in ways that facilitate flow states in their ordinary lives. This carries some evidence: the mechanisms that make flow difficult (excessive self-monitoring, perfectionism, fear of failure) are the same mechanisms that psychedelic experiences tend to temporarily dismantle.
Microdosing protocols have attracted specific interest in relation to flow states, with many users reporting that sub-perceptual doses reduce the friction that ordinarily interrupts deep work. The research evidence here is less clear than the anecdotal reports suggest, but the hypothesis is plausible enough to warrant continued investigation.
The overlap between descriptions of flow and descriptions of meditation states is also relevant, and research on both practices increasingly finds convergent effects on the brain's self-referential processing systems.
