History of Psychedelics

    The long arc of humanity's relationship with psychedelic substances, from indigenous traditions through the mid-century research wave, prohibition, and the current renaissance.


    Ancient Roots

    Humans have used psychoactive plants and fungi for thousands of years. Archaeological evidence suggests that psilocybin mushrooms, peyote, ayahuasca, and other psychedelic substances played roles in ritual, healing, and spiritual practice across cultures on every inhabited continent. The Mazatec tradition of psilocybin mushroom ceremonies in Mexico, the use of peyote among Indigenous peoples of North America, and the ayahuasca practices of Amazonian communities are among the most well-documented, but they represent only a fraction of the full picture.

    The Modern Research Wave and Its Collapse

    Western science encountered psychedelics in earnest in the 1940s and 1950s, following Albert Hofmann's synthesis of LSD in 1938 and his accidental discovery of its effects in 1943. The next two decades saw an explosion of research: over 1,000 published studies, investigations into alcoholism, depression, anxiety, and creativity, and serious academic interest from institutions like Harvard, Johns Hopkins, and the Maudsley Hospital. This era also saw uncontrolled experimentation, CIA programs like MKUltra, and the enthusiastic public advocacy of figures like Timothy Leary. By the early 1970s, a political backlash, cultural anxiety, and the Controlled Substances Act effectively ended above-ground research for decades.

    The Renaissance

    The current revival began quietly in the 1990s with Rick Strassman's DMT research at the University of New Mexico and gained momentum through the work of groups like MAPS (now Lykos Therapeutics) and the Johns Hopkins Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research. Today, major universities, government agencies, and pharmaceutical companies are investing in psychedelic research at a scale not seen since the 1960s. The renaissance is characterized by rigorous clinical methodology, careful regulatory engagement, and an awareness of the mistakes that ended the first wave.
