Visual Phenomena

    The range of visual phenomena in psychedelic experiences - from perceptual enhancement to geometric patterns to immersive visionary environments - how they vary by substance and dose, and what they actually represent.


    Visual phenomena are among the most publicly recognized and culturally depicted features of psychedelic experiences, and among the most variable. They range from subtle geometricization of surfaces at threshold doses to vivid, apparently autonomous visual content at high doses - and they vary significantly depending on substance, dose, individual neurological factors, and the character of the experience itself.

    At lower doses, visual effects typically involve enhancement of ordinary perception: colors appear more saturated, surfaces seem to breathe or shimmer, visual details become more intricate and attention-drawing. These perceptual changes are sometimes described as a heightening rather than a distortion - the world appearing more vivid than it is in ordinary awareness, as if the signal-to-noise ratio has temporarily improved.

    As doses increase, more complex phenomena emerge. Geometric patterns - often described as fractals, lattices, mandalas, or kaleidoscopic structures - appear with eyes both open and closed. These patterns are thought to reflect the intrinsic organization of visual processing circuits, revealed when ordinary input processing is overridden. They vary between substances in their specific character: the geometry of psilocybin, LSD, and DMT each has recognizable qualities that experienced users describe as distinctive.

    At higher doses, and particularly with substances like DMT and in deep psilocybin sessions, visual phenomena can become narrative: not patterns but scenes, environments, beings, and architectures that appear to exist as spaces rather than as overlays on ordinary perception. These are often described with the quality of hyperreality: more vivid, more detailed, and more significant-feeling than ordinary vision.

    Eyes-open and eyes-closed experience differ considerably. Eyes-open visual effects integrate with ordinary perception - the room, the ceiling, the face of a companion are still visible but transformed. Eyes-closed experience typically produces more immersive, internally generated content. Eyeshades are used in clinical settings partly to support inward attention and prevent the anchoring of the experience to external visual content.

    The visual dimension of psychedelic experiences is often what people expect to be the primary content; it is just as often peripheral to what turns out to matter emotionally and psychologically.
