Ross defines classic psychedelics as drugs acting mainly through the serotonin 2A receptor, grouping LSD, psilocybin, and DMT (in ayahuasca) together. Ketamine, blocking the NMDA receptor, is already approved for treatment-resistant depression; MDMA has some addictive potential and FDA breakthrough status for PTSD.

    Perception, the self, and the psychedelic brain

    Seth reframes perception as a construction the brain builds from sensory input and prior expectation. "I like to think about perception as a kind of controlled hallucination," he says. The self, including body ownership and continuity over time, is itself a perception, and ego dissolution reflects a rearrangement of the processes that assemble it. With Imperial College London, his team found psilocybin and LSD increase randomness in brain activity, and that resting-state networks, including the default mode network, reorganize.

    Children, the Amazon, and openness without drugs

    Gopnik links this to development: young brains favor short-range connections and are built for exploration over efficiency; pruning across childhood trades flexibility for competence. Psychedelics, she suggests, may temporarily reopen that plastic state, alongside routes like meditation. Kohn describes how the community he works with uses ayahuasca, dreaming, and attention to the forest as technologies for stepping outside everyday thought and connecting with the "mind of the forest." A clip shows an elder preparing ayahuasca and a ceremony; Kohn stresses this is a deliberate, ritualized practice for healing or communal problems, not recreation.

    Mystical experience and the philosophical questions it raises

    Ross describes an NYU study giving high-dose psilocybin to religious professionals, tracing the idea to Walter Pahnke's 1962 "Marsh Chapel" experiment at Harvard, where divinity students given psilocybin reported full mystical experiences far more often than a niacin control group. In Ross's cancer trials, this mystical-type experience's intensity correlated with psilocybin's anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects. Gopnik raises a puzzle: these experiences often carry what William James called a "noetic" quality, a felt sense of truth. Kohn adds that the elders he works with describe the forest as an ongoing "emergent mind" under threat. "The call from the Amazon is to live psychedelically," he says, framing this as the community's worldview, not a scientific claim.

    From lab to clinic: the case for psilocybin therapy

    Ross entered the field in 2006, learning how much psychedelic research had already been done between the 1950s and early 1970s. The strongest evidence comes from three randomized controlled trials (UCLA, Johns Hopkins, NYU, 92 participants total) testing a single high dose of psilocybin for cancer-related anxiety and depression. Ross reports 80 percent no longer met criteria for depression one day after dosing, effects persisting at seven weeks and eight months for many, versus 20 to 40 percent in placebo groups. Participants Octavian Mihai and Dinah Bazer describe on stage how a single session reduced fear tied to their diagnoses. Ross also outlines trials for major depression, alcoholism, addiction, and anorexia.

    Risks, "freelancing," and where the science is headed

    Ross flags psychosis risk, especially for people already prone to it, screens out significant heart problems, and warns ayahuasca, an MAO inhibitor, combined with serotonergic antidepressants can cause serotonin syndrome. Kohn and Gopnik raise ayahuasca tourism and unsupervised microdosing as use outside the screening and integration that traditional and clinical settings provide. Several panelists return to set and setting: impact depends heavily on context and a trained guide, and as Seth puts it, freelancing is probably not the best approach. Ross predicts psilocybin and MDMA, given through licensed clinics, could become available within about five years, starting with cancer-related distress, though he frames this as his own projection, not a guarantee.
