    The substance

    Psilocybin mushrooms do not announce themselves. Most species are small, pale to golden-brown, with thin stems and caps that bruise blue when handled, a visible sign of the psilocin oxidizing inside. Psilocybe cubensis, the most widely recognized species, grows on cattle dung in tropical and subtropical regions, an origin that belies the depth of what it contains.

    But cubensis is only one member of a large family. Over 200 species across more than a dozen genera produce psilocybin: Psilocybe, Panaeolus, Gymnopilus, Pluteus, Copelandia, and others.     Legal status

    Psilocybin is classified as Schedule I under the UN Convention on Psychotropic Substances and remains illegal in most countries. The legal landscape is shifting, unevenly.
